THINKING PATIENT AFFAIRS

The Philosophy of Public Engagement: when Knowledge meets Society

Di Laura Patrucco - Patient Affairs & Advocacy Lead

In recent years, clinical research has undergone a significant evolution—not only in methodological and technological terms but also in its relationship with society. Within this context, the concept of public engagement as the active involvement of citizens in the research process has emerged as a guiding philosophy capable of redefining how science interacts with the public.

Public engagement in clinical research goes far beyond simply communicating results, because it is based on a collaborative, two-way dialogue between researchers, patients, caregivers, associations, institutions, policymakers, and civil organizations. The goal is to foster research that is more transparent, responsible, ethical, and, above all, person-centered.

It’s not just about transmitting knowledge, but building it together.

This philosophy acknowledges that citizens are not passive recipients of knowledge, but stakeholders of experiences, values, needs, and skills that can meaningfully contribute to shaping research questions, defining clinical priorities, and assessing the social impact of scientific projects.

A Two-Way Dialogue

From an ethical standpoint, this approach reflects the principles of participatory medicine and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), promoting participation as a right, not a privilege.

The citizen/patient is not a mere spectator, but a dialogue partner. This means institutions should not only "inform", but also "listen".

Dialogue is central: there is no engagement without mutual listening, without recognizing the value of "non-academic" knowledge—that stems from experience, personal stories, and local communities.

Why Philosophy?

Public engagement in clinical research is not just a communication strategy; it is a true worldview, it’s a philosophy that values open, dialogic, and shared science, where knowledge is built together, with and for the people.

The Challenge Is Real Involvement

True health engagement is like a bridge between science and society, between culture and citizenship, between experts and non-experts. And like any bridge, it only works if it’s built from both sides.

Life Science 4.0 will be the bridge that brings science and knowledge closer to the community—a true cultural revolution that will heal us.
