European and local supervisory authorities consider clinical research and scientific knowledge to be public goods that deserve support and incentive. The Regulation (EU) 2016/679 ("GDPR") also promotes data accessibility and availability for scientific researchers, provided that appropriate technical and organizational measures are in place to safeguard the rights and freedoms of individuals.

In this week’s Privacy Pill, we will analyse the EU regime of derogations from the data protection principles (see art. 5), as well as the rights of the data subjects (see Chapter III) applicable to clinical research activities.
