THINKING PATIENT AFFAIRS

The space of questions: Patient Affairs as a maieutic dialogue

Di Laura Patrucco - Patient Affairs & Advocacy Lead

The quality of dialogue is often more decisive than the content collected. It is not enough to listen; one must also create a context in which patients’ lived experiences can emerge clearly and become a strategic resource. This is where the Socratic dialogue offers a valuable operational reference, a philosophical framework that can guide proactive dialogue.

The Socratic method is based on a simple conviction: awareness cannot be transmitted, it is accompanied. In Patient Affairs, this means avoiding questions that lead or filter and instead favoring open questions that create space. A space where patients can express not only what they know but also what they feel, often for the first time in a structured way. In this process, what emerges is not mere data, but insight, a perspective capable of guiding services, pathways and innovations.

Patient Affairs moments make dialogue more conscious and generative. The goal is not to find the “right” answer but the authentic one; needs are not anticipated, they are explored together. This approach values patients’ own knowledge, transforming it into a fundamental contribution for understanding the complexity of the healthcare system.

Empowerment is the second point of intersection.
Maieutics recognizes an active role for the other; in Patient Affairs, this translates into considering patients as partners rather than mere witnesses. It means clarifying objectives, expectations, and operational boundaries so that patients’ contributions become a real part of decision-making processes.

Finally, participatory communication represents the natural continuation of the Socratic method. Communicating does not only mean simplifying; it means making complexity understandable for all stakeholders involved. In Patient Affairs, this approach builds connection, transparency and mutual understanding.

Thinking of Socratic dialogue means making the relationship the true driver of value. Transformation does not occur when something is explained, it happens when someone is guided to bring it to light.

The right questions for the right answers.
